  • Identifying Chrome / Nickel

How can you tell if plating is chrome or nickel? I'm working on an antenna mast off of a 66 corvette. I would like to refinish it with the original coating. I sanded an area thru to the brass and didn't visually see any intermediate plating.

The Chrome will have a blue tint to it in the light and the Nickel will have a yellow tint to it. For me it's hard to tell but i can see it in pic's real good.

That would be about impossible for me to tell. Is there any way to test it by having it react with a chemical? Magnetic properties etc.

        Identifying Chrome

If you know how to dechrome, you will know the object is chrome plated if you get a yellowish color either in the dechroming tank or the anode if you are brush plating. Hope this helps.
