I am thinking of getting a 4.5 gallon tumbler. I have carpletunnel and am trying to make plating easier on myself. Could anyone tell me what all I can use this for and how long of a piece I can get into this system? Will I be able to use it for preperation as well as finish?

I've used them in a machine shop for deburring parts and getting a nice consistant finish over the whole part. They have a wide variety of medias to accomplish different finishes. The last one I worked with would take a part about 12" long. I'm not with familiar with their use for plating prep or finish work.

Re: tell me what you know about those tumblers
Yes, you can put a carburetor in a tumbler but wether it helps or hurts will depend on the media used. You'll have to make sure all the orifices are clear. I've used tumblers for deburring in a machine shop, not for polishing so I can't help with what media would be best. I talked to guys that use a corn cob or, walnut shell in combination with other media. Any place that sells the media should be able to recommend something. Hope this helps. SS

Re: tell me what you know about those tumblers
Am working with rusted nuts and bolts right now. Using Caswell's Ceramic Triangles 1/4" - Medium in a Vibratory Tumbler and they are coming out like they had a real fine sandblast to them. I had planed on just getting them ready to powder coat. Now I think I will get there fine and treated walnut shell and try to do some small pieces of AL. to see how close I can get it for buffing.
