  • Gas tank liner question

I bought some of the Phenol Novolac Sealer for a motorcycle tank and have a question before I apply it.

I made the tank from scratch out of sheetmetal that came with a protective coating (zinc?) Its a gray-ish color. I didn't remove the coating before making the tank, so now I'm wondering if it's OK to apply the epoxy sealer over this, or if I need to figure out a way to remove the coating.

    Thanks,

    Re: Gas tank liner question

This is probably a zinc plate.
I would suggest that you clean the zinc by running a 2% muriatic acid into the tank. This will etch the zinc and remove a great deal of it. Leave it in there for a minute, then rinse and dry thoroughly.

    Then apply the sealer

OK, sounds like a plan. Thanks.
