prices for work

what do you guys charge per item? do you have a base rate or do you go item ? I realize there's going to be exceptions but how do you figuar for prep work, sandblasting, masking, multi coats? out here where I live I can almost hold a gun and ask for the wallet..cause everything here needs to be sent over a50 miles away to the closest shop,,,I just want to be fair, yet not give the farm away either...thanks....
