  • PC over Liquid Steel filler?

I took my fuel tank off my 900RR, and noticed i had about an inch of Bondo filling a big dint...

So i decided to stop yelling at the man that sold it to me, since that was getting me no where... and filled it in with this liquid steel. i plan on putting a couple layers of lab metal over it to super smooth it out and make sure the powder conducts to it.. but I just wanted to know if someone actually done this already, because I dont want to do the job and find out its bubbling or out gassing like a mother!....

On a side note, just be careful of the safety side of this. It is a fuel tank, and you are going to be heating it to 400 degrees. I'm not sure if that is hot enough to burn fuel, but just a thought.

I don't know if any body has tried this so your may or may not get an answer. But, since you said that you put the liquid filler in there why not run an experiment. Take a piece of sheet metal, put some of your liquid filler on and than some lab metal and pc away. That will right away tell you if it will outgas or if any other problems occur.

Metal-2-Metal is a body filler and it is conductive for powder coating. I have already used it on several things and it helps prevent out gassing. I had a peice that was out gassing so i spread a very thin layer and sanded it back down smooth to help prevent it from out gassing again and it cut out 99% of out gassing. i figured the 1% was the spots that i just didn't spread the Metal-2-Metal over. You should find this a local body & paint store.

Is metal 2 metal and lab metal pretty much the same?
Any preferences. I have a cast iron part I broke and silver
soldered back together and need to clean up the seames with
something before I P.C. it and was wondering what's the best?
Has anyone tried Devcon aluminum putty 10610?
            Thanks,

From what i have read, I would say Lab metal would be closer to JB Weld or some thing similar. Metal-2-Metal is more like bondo. Thats about all i could really say cause i havent tried the lab metal yet. If its very small patch i would use the lab metal.

Metal 2 Metal being bondo based can it take 400 deg. F without
                a problem?
                Thanks,

well I coated it lastnight, and the turnout wasnt as good as I thought it would of been. Around the filler, it just bubbled the powder. it was awfull. and a texture powder didnt cover it to well either. Will bondo hold up? I can work wonders with Bondo and fiberglass and carbon fiber resin! I dont think it will hold up to the heat..

So has anyone tried bondo yet? WAORacing, have you?

I have used Qwik Steel putty with great results as far as heat resistance. I used it to fill in a few spots on a set of valve covers and pre-heated them to out gas them and it held up great. They are magniesum btw. Once I get done preping my motor I will be cleaning and outgassing them again prior to PC and hope to have them done thise weekend.

I used the aluminum epoxy powder of JB weld and it seamed to work just fine....

I will need to get back to you on durability....
