  • Powder Coating a whole car?

    Here's my idea: I want to disassemble my 1969 Bronco and powder coat the hood, fenders, windshield frame, doors and tailgate now that my oven is large enough to handle these parts. The problem is that there are still a few parts that cannot be removed from the truck like both rear quarter panels. I don't have the money for one of the nice IR lamps yet and need ideas on how to cure the powder on these 2 panels. Any ideas? Would a heat gun work well enough for this? Seems like it would produce an uneven cure on such a large panel. I'm open to any ideas. I don't want to bring the tub to a shop and pay someone else to use their oven because I want to leave the tub on the frame with all wiring, etc. intact. Anyone done this before?

    auto maker's have been powder coat auto's for year's .. i have used a heatgun on valve cover's but i would not use one to cure that much powder .. bmw /gm got a huge booth they coat it and run it in this booth with ir light's everywhere .. some firetruck companies do the frame's this way .. i would remove all the wiring on the tub before placing it in that much heat ...

      I'm in the middle of doing a 98 dodge stratus right now. if it ever stops raining.

      Im using IR propane curing lamp. just have to watch the temp and watch hte FUEL area!

        I'll have to look into the propane IR light way of curing. My oven is plenty large enough for all the body panels, just not the rear quarters since they are welded to the tub...I'll post pictures of it when I finish. Thanks for the responses guys.

          I'd love alittle more proof of these automakers powder coating cars since I have never heard of this.

            found some info, epoxy powder primers have been used and Mercedes was using powder clear but from the article I read powdering cars is still sketchy and as of today, its not really being done. The cars in the early 80's that were powder coating all rusted out due to lack of metal prep.

              It seems the big drawbacks today on this subject, are paint/finish repairs. The manufacturers are working on these items to make them more possible. Who knows how long or "if" it will ever be common to buy a powder coated car, but the size is of no issue for sure..... Complications for touch-ups and repairs are the hurdles to overcome. There are also Shoot and cure systems they use to powder coat things as large as barges..... however the beauty of the finish is of little importance in that application, but we know they do that stuff on site using the XIOM brand system.... may be other brands available too.....

              As a comment about the rusting cars..... hell.... everything built in the early 80's did poorly,.... Must have been a manufacturing conspiracy or something huh? LOL

                Any time someone mentions powder coating a car, the first thing that comes to mind is repairing it if it gets damaged. We have body shops on every corner, not powder coating shops. Besides all the many obvious reasons, just sanding the car down, have you ever sanded powder coat? doesnt matter what grit you use, three passes and the paper is clogged! The article was very interesting, I'll try to find it, but it mentioned that metal prep was poor so I wonder what there technology was with phosphates, did they use a primer on those specific cars? (I cant remember from my readings) And they also mentioned hard to coat areas. Thats probably one of the first things. If the part/car isnt fully coated, thats just asking for failure.
