I am new to this PC stuff. I am trying to think ahead. If I do my auto rims, what is the likelyhood that the tire people will munch up the edge when putting on the new tires.

Depends on the machine they use and how much they care about their work. Your basic tire store chain doesn't give a rat's you-know-what about your wheels. Find a shop with the "touchless" mounting machines, explain the "fragility" of the coating to the service folks and ask 'em to be careful.

Yeah you have to be careful of that... When I got the rims changed on our truck I have nice Eagle Alloys on them and the chop took a huge chunk out of the thing and then stripped all my lugs and everything on both front tires and messed the allignment and balancing up. Tell them about what you got and that it's very important not to mess it up.

Even then it won't necessarily help. A couple years ago my 4Runner got broken in to and the BAS***D who did it cleaned out the glove box - including the key to my wheel locks.
Took the thing to a local tire chain whose name I won't mention (but it rhymes with Miss Count Fire) to get the old locks off and I told them to be very careful not to scratch the wheels when they removed the locks.
When I picked up the truck, all 4 wheels were scratched like someone had taken a screwdriver to them and all 4 center caps were dented and scratched. The manager gave me some BS story about how it's "impossible" to not scratch a wheel with this process so I promptly picked up his phone and called the district manager and "voiced my displeasure" (translation: read him the riot act)
I had a new set of wheels, locks and center caps the next day.

Yeah people out here are really bad about doing things right. I have never brought our truck somewhere to get something fixed without it being messed up like when we had to get the radiator pumped out. I do all my own work on everything and mostly because I like to and also because I can't truck anyone to even put tires on the damn thing. The dents in the center caps were from the gun most likely because they did it to my truck and messed them up bad. Maybe I should start my own tire changing shop where I don't mess nothing up unlike everyone else?Hah.
