  • Powder Coating MDF

Any ever heard of powder coating MDF? Anyone try it? I saw a small blurb that it can be done due to the moisure content in the MDF being enough to provide conductivity.

why would you want to?? MDF turns to **** the second it gets damp.

Yes it can be done,I have sprayed MDF. The point is to seal it and color it cheaply. There is also water resistant MDF.

What kind of a finish do you end up with? Does it look similar to metal that is coated?

Yes, its similar to coated metal but not as smooth.Very close though. It's being used more and more on things like pinball machines, vending machines, store displays, office furniture and cabinets.

I was thinking it would be a cool way to put a coating on some speaker cabinets that I build. Nice and durable.

Powdering on MDF works better if its flat panels and not shapes. If you want a wild look for that I would purchase MDF with aluminum laminated on it.The aluminum is very thin but coats super nicely.Actually you could laminate it yourself. What are you doing for the seams of the boxes?
