I have been using Alum Oxide and it has worked just fine for me. I have to pick up some glass bead for detail/polishing work soon.

DON'T USE REGULAR PLAY SAND. THE SILICATE IS VERY BAD FOR YOU TO INHALE.

You can try checking with your local equipment rental business. Most that rent large blasting units also carry and sell grit at a fair price.
Today's mighty oak was just some nut that held it's ground !

Glass bead is one product that leaves a very smooth finish that doesn't require any further work.

Yes, but shipping would negate any saving for most of us.... 50lbs to Fl would kill me. Besides, when I want love I just go buy playground sand and then post about it here and FEEL all Kinds of Luv!

BTW, thanks I did not know they offered that. will keep that in mind.

regular sand isnt too bad if you wear a good respirator and your blasting outdoors
still though play sand is designed to trap moisture and hold shapes (sandcastles)
which makes it a pain the butt to use in a blaster
lowes sells a quickcrete medium sand industrial white sand that flows much better and leaves a great profile at 2.94 a 50# bag which is just a tad more than play sand
either kind of sand though ithinkk is really slow compared to alminum oxide
and blasting outdoors can still get really expensive since your losing all your sand so eventually its way worth building a booth and recycling aluminum oxide

                    glass

glass bead isnt the best stuff to use even thought its fast and leaves a decent profile
it closes off the pores in the metal which can make your coatings adhere a little poorly
and be a lot less durable for high abuse pieces like dirtbike and four wheeler parts
