  • electrostatic powder paint gun

I powder paint fishing lures with a fluid bed, pre-heat parts, then dip in powder bed, then bake on.
I have trouble filling the eyelets of the fishing lures. I am looking at this electrostatic powder paint gun from Caswell for $1200.
Does anyone have any experience with this gun?
Can I control the powder from filling the eyelet?
Or, would I be wasting my time and money to try this?

    Thanks!

    Re: electrostatic powder paint gun

Well depending on the size of the hole we are talking about and what the Loop (hole) is made of (metal) if you magnatize it then yes you stand a chance of filling the holes. Is there anyway to fill the hole with a string? Nail? any thing to not fill it? How big of a hole are we talking about?
I have a gun similar to this gun and I have the hobby gun as well. Seems I use the hobby more then the pro gun, but the progun you can a just the charge (kv) this may help or not.. With out seeing the product its really hard to say...

      Re: electrostatic powder paint gun

      Hey thanks Jim!

Here is a pic of what I am working on now.
The 1st on the left, I used a small piece of silicone tubing to mask the eyelet, but get inconsistance results. When I pre-heat the jigs, powder melts around the silicone tubing and makes a sharp edge. I remove the tubing before I bake the powder.
The 2nd from the left is a bare lead head jig. The hook is steel plated with or called black nickle. The finish on the hooks is very smooth and hard, not like Bronze or gold plated hooks.
The eyelet hole is about 50 to 60 thousandths, almost 1/32 inch.
The 3rd from the left is what I want, the eyelet is open and the 4 the from the left is filled with powder paint.
Anytime I put anything in the eyelet, it leaves a sharp edge (will cut the fishing line) I've tried drilling, poking and blowing out the eyelets. Problem is I usually dip 200 at a time and the first few I can still open the hole but after that the heat keeps melting and then it becomes to hard to easilily open the hole. I have small drill bits to drill the holes, but some of my customers are concerned that the edge on the drilled powder could cut the line.
I have seem some jigs that were electrostatily powder painted and they looked perfect.
So, that is why I'm interested in this Portable Pro Series Powder Coating System
From what I have heard, I should be able to adust the voltage down in order to get a thinner coat of powder to keep from filling the eyelet. Now if there is no heat on the jigs, I could put something in the hole to keep powder out of the hole and remove before baking. Does that seem doable?

      Thanks,

      David

What your saying is very do-able with the Pro-Gun..
Would just take a little time working out the kv setting...
