  • Extreme Chrome with Clear Coat How to...

This is the write up I promised back around Christmas but due to family issues I was not able to get to it...
The 2 Images attached are done with extreme chrome and super high gloss clear coat.
    Image 0504 is just Chrome:
Image 0506 has teh clear coat on it..
Now the How To Part of this post..
    Do your prep as normal,
Apply Chrome as normal BUT applying only enought to coat and not over coat you want a good thin layer. Now Cure at 375 for 30 mins, yes this is after it has come up to that temp ( the part not the oven ).
After curing let part(s) cool to room temp this is very important that it is room temp!!!
Now reheat part to 150 degree's +/- 10% remove from oven then clear coat for the required time, No more no less.
So far I have used over a pound of powder each and have turned out the same results each and ever time.. With very very little to no cloud effect..

Can someone talk more about clear coat? Is it a powder also? Do you spray and bake the color, then spray and bakee the clear after? Or is it a liquid clear?

The clear is a powder that you spray and bake. I just got a few lbs. of the super high gloss clear and it looks killer. My customer was VERY happy!

The method I posted above will only work with the Extreme. The Super and Near Chrome will turn a grayish tone..

            Hi Jim,

How do you get the clear to attach itself, with the 150 degree heat? I have been thinking a lot about how to powder coat the color - Artic Ice in my case, then recoat with Clear without grinding a place in the steel wheel to catch the anode for the gun. Does the heat catch the clear powder coat so I don't have to have a "colorless" area where I attach the alligator clip?

            Thanks in advance, Tom

It's easily scratched, and it will oxodize over time.

                  Hi Jim,

I powdercoated a 15 inch rim last night with Artic Ice and Clear. First, I baked the Artic Ice and baked that in my kitchen oven that I have moved into the garage. I had to spray the inside then the outside and bake. Then, I pulled the rim out and let the temp drop to 150 degrees and inverted the rim, as I baked it outside, or shiney side out and up on the oven's rack. I powdercoated the inside first and turned the rim over and got the rim back up to 150 degrees and then found I could attach the ground wire and get the powder to draw toward the rim, so I may have answered my own question.

That is to reconnect the ground wire and shoot away as the powder will stick whether or not the temp is 150 degrees.

                  Am I correct.

                  Thanks in advance, Tom

                    Tom,
Yes you are correct. You need to attach the ground everytime you shoot the powder...

You can use the all powders on anything that will not exced 400 degrees. So yes but you may loss a little around the exhaust ports.. But not much that I ever noticed..

What sort of price would you charge on doing the extreme chrome and clear on 4 atv rims? Any input would be great.
