  • Burn off temps

When burning off powder what temperature can the following items tolerate without causing damage to the part?

    1. Stock valve covers
    2. Motorcycle frame
    3. Cast aluminum parts
    4. Steel wheels

I do have access to a permitted industrial burn off oven. Thanks in advance for the help.

This is not a easy question to answer their are many different types of metals and how they are processed. Some will lose their strength when exposed to high temps. I for one do not recommend that you burn off PC you will have better results if you media blast them.

        Re: Burn off temps

Thanks for the response guys. Even though I use the burn off oven every day to remove epoxy from A36 steel I was a bit hesitant to use it on other items. Present setup has the burn chamber running at 600 degrees F for two hours then ramping up 50 degrees every two hours until a 750 degree burn is completed. What comes out of the oven is ready for a quick blast and another round of powder. Items burnt are hanging fixtures for an automated line. I had a guy drop off some junk parts from a old demolition car to try out. Think I'll see what it does just for the heck of it but won't consider using it on any structural or support items like wheels or frames. Thanks for your input.

What temp does normal paint burn off at? Could we use our kitchen/PC ovens to burn off paint before coating?

            Re: Burn off temps

the stock valve covers are the only think i would try. the wheels, and motorcycle frame definately not due to chance of removing temper and makeing them weak. as for the aluminum it will most likely destroy the heat treat and make them brittle.
when in doubt polish it out/ why replace it when you can refinish it

              jacob2025,

You can use a burn-off oven for all the products you listed. You should not got any higher than 750 deg F. I personally know several companies that use burn-off ovens for wheel refurbishing and removing powder coat. The ovens do a better more efficient job than sandblasting is more safe than any chemical bath.

              Hope this helps.
