  • oil pan question

A guy I work with had an old oil pan rust out from the inside. Kind of weird. But anyway he got a new one and he was wondering if I could powdercoat the inside as well as the outside.
So I thought I would see if anyone else had ever done both. My only concern would be if by chance the inner coating would come off and plug up the oil pump.

    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

I would not do it. Soak in it for a few days and see how it looks and just coat the outside.

      Re: oil pan question

Most of the import oil pans are coated inside and out now days. We use to paint the lifter valley on race motors to help get the oil back to the pan faster. It was much less work than polishing it. Just make sure the prep is done right. I wonder what was wrong that a pan would rust out from the inside, it's not normal or common.

Water in the pan is not a good thing....
If it jams; Force it. And if it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

          Yup.. moisture = rust

Rust in the oil pan not a good thing. Maybe blown head gasket allowing coolant to mix with the oil and rust out?

Id have to say a head gasket or a cracked cylinder wall... a cracked cylinder wall will be a major rebuild....

              Re: oil pan question

Oil pans will rust some from outside in others from inside out. You always get moisture inside your engine, called condention. Comes from engine warming up or cooling down more so if you live in a colder climate. Toyotas do this all the time for some reason. If it is a NEW PAN and only if it is new you can powder the inside as well. When I pc heads I coat the whole head well not the underside and have never had any issues.. Again onlt pc it if it is brand new and never seen oil.. Make sure you sand blast the finish off the pan inside and out.. Also if cure says 15 mins take it to 20...
Heck I've even coated the inside of blocks not the cylinders but ever thing else..

                Re: oil pan question

Rust from the inside is probably from inadequate crankcase venting, allowing settling of moisture laden air when the engine cools.

Thanks everyone for the great answers. I think since I am new to this I will probably tell him I will just do the outside. I would hate to have to buy him a new engine...lol.

                  Thanks again.
