are you guys 'legit' businesses or do you do this 'on the side'?

i mentioned that i'm going to PC some of my own parts to the maintenance supervisor where i work and he said he would like me to do all the guards and the like that are on the machines. but he said i needed to have a business name to be able to pay me for the 'outsourced' work. don't know as if i'm ready to start a business, just curious how you guys do it.

I registered Back Yard Powder Coating a few years back as a DBA ( Doing Business As ) in this cause James Shuster doing Business as Back Yard PC. This allowed me to open a checking account and file tax's under my SS number when I file at the beging of the year. Most states charge a small 1 time fee. PA is 75.00.

Could you give me more info on this. I'm in PA as well and I'm interested in doing something like this. I think I'll be doing a good amount of business this year and want to keep everything legal. Do you then charge PA sales tax? Who do I go to to see about doing this? Any and all info would be greatly appreciated.

You can do this on-line at https://www.state.pa.us/PAPower/site/default.asp you want to file a DBA or sole propritiership (?sp) . You will not do sales tax on your service but if you sell a product then you would charge a sales tax in PA. You provide a service so no sales tax. You will be charge a tax based on your income from business.
Once you fill out the DBA form you can then print it and it will become your Proof of your Company name. DO NOT LOSE IT... Any and all bank and tax records will have your company name plus DBA ( ex Back Yard Powder Coating DBA James R Shuster) ..

We filed in NJ as an LLC and charge sales tax. We are a passthrough organization which means that we pass the profits through the corporation to ourselves thereby avoiding taxes for the company and adding it into our personal income taxes. This way we only pay taxes once. It was very easy to file and is much less complicated than you might think. For our situation it made the most sense, but you will need to take some time to read the advantages and disadvantages of each corp type and decide which is best for you. I got a great deal of info from the SBA, and they have people that you can call to help you if you would like.
