Powder coating process..

I've been doing some reading about the powder coating process. Some places are recommending "pickling" or pretreating a piece before coating aswell as using a primer(do you prime it, cure it, powder coat it, then cure it again?). Also, with metallic powder coats(im guessing chrome powder coat?) its suggested to use a clear coat. Do you cure the piece, then clear coat it, then cure it again? If you have FAQ, Caswell, i'd appreciate it. Thanks again.

Oh yea, i've got another quick question. What is the approximate square footage or area that 1lb of powder coat will cover? Also, when will you be getting more colors availible Caswell? Thanks again.

Tom G- There are two methods currently recommended that I'm sure work. First is to cure both coats completely allowing part to cool in between.
Second is to bake first coat until it flows out then allow to cool, then apply second coat and cure completely.
You will see color shade differences between the two methods so always use scrap sample pieces if you have them.
Powders containing metal need a clear to seal them from oxidation, if it an indoor use item than you can skip the clear. I prefer to use the clear cause it gives the finish a deep look similar to paint. Clear can be used on opaque colors as well.
I agree on powder coverage is 1oz to 1square foot, but plan on a little more for gun adjusting and overspray. You will see that a little powder goes a very long ways if not wasted.
