Can I PC this head?

Hey guys - spent today soda blasting my cylinder head. I wanted to coat it in a silver single stage powder but I am worried about two things.

1) The heat of baking (and pre heating the piece) warping the head

2) The head of the engine burning the PC when all is said and done


Anything to be concerned about? I am a little concerned about screwing this head up as it's hard to find for this particular car in this particular shape.

Here is a picture - I know it needs to be degreased and cleaned in a slight few areas. I am not going to PC the gasket surfaces (intake, exhaust, or head).

first problem you might have- is the valve seats loosening up with the heat.- I can't say for sure with that head- you shouldn't but some heads have such issues. Another thing it do you plan on milling the head before ore after?- the same with all the other machine work? I'd recomend coating it and then have the machine work done as some aluminum heads have a dendencie to warp with heat if they're not bolted down/assembled, ect. other than that you should be good to go.

Ya, I wouldnt be worried with that head, Nor about seats loosening. Combustion temps way hotter than curing temps, and that head should not warp, because you are heating it evenly, and only to 400. Heads see temperature Gradients of thousands of degreed between the water jacket and the combustion chamber.

Can you really bake a longer duration at a lower temperature?

Yes you can. Check the Tech Data sheet for the cure parameters of the powder you're using.

that head should not warp, because you are heating it evenly, and only to 400.

I'm not saying that it will warp- but it is a very strong possibility. I worked in a machine shop for many years and when we had an aluminum head that was really warped- we'd bolt it to a straightnig plate and bake at only 350*, I know that combustion temps are alot higher than that but the head is assembled and evenly torqued down at the time, therefor it isn't alowed to warp. I'm just saying don't be surprised if you have to mill it afterwards- which I'd recomend anyways since the head gasket mating surface has been blasted!

i did the jugs and heads on my harley with eastwoods hi-temp silver. the key is to clean clean clean. eastwood sells a spray called pre prep. I sprayed mine really good then baked for about an hour and repeated a couple of times. this makes sure all the contaminates are out of the metal. it came out perfect and with the high temp powder I dont worry about heat. The only reason I went wish eastwood instead of caswell powder is because they had the hi-temp color i needed
