  • Powdercoating Aluminum

Do you need to zinc chromate aluminum before powder-coating it?

    Thanks,

    George

No, it's not needed but it does help promote adhesion.

What do you think of a light sand blasting instead? Would that be as an effective foundation as the zinc.

        TIA

Sandblasting does rough the surface and yes it helps but for different reasons.1- by roughing the surface you increase the surface area slightly.
2 you create places for the powder to physically get in to the nooks and basically hold on.
3- it physically cleans the surface of paint, dirt and oils that prevent adhesion.

Zinc is a conversion coating that attaches to the aluminum and then the powder bonds to the zinc. <- this is over simplified but you get the idea.
